How we make money
Last updated: October 2026
Skills for Design is run by one person, Radu, in New York. Keeping the directory free takes money, so here's exactly where it comes from and the rules we follow.
Where the money comes from
- Sponsor slots. Companies can pay to show a placement on the site, currently $99 for 30 days. Sponsor slots are always labeled "Sponsored", and their links are marked as sponsored for search engines (
rel="sponsored"). - Pinned paid listings. If a maker pays for a pinned spot, that placement is labeled "Sponsored" too, so you can tell what's paid. We don't label paid placements "Featured" on their own.
- Affiliate links. Some links may be affiliate links, and they're marked as such. If you sign up or buy through one, we may earn a commission. It doesn't cost you anything extra. An affiliate link is labeled "Paid link" right where it appears, with a short note on the page. This site does not claim membership in any particular affiliate program.
- The newsletter (coming soon). Issues may include a sponsor, labeled "Sponsored" in the email.
We don't sell your data, and we don't run ad-network tracking. See our Privacy policy.
What money can't buy
- Scores, verdicts and reviews are never for sale. Sponsors and affiliate partners get no say over what we write or how we score. A sponsor can get a low score.
- Paying doesn't change a tool's position in the ranked directory. The default sort is Top rated: tested listings first, by editorial score, then by GitHub stars (as of the date shown). You can also sort and filter. Paid placements sit in their own labeled slots and are not mixed into that ranking.
- We only add affiliate links to tools we'd list anyway. Commission isn't a reason to list or recommend something.
- If we ever list something we made or have a stake in, or got paid access or a free product to test, we'll say so on that listing.
How testing works
Every before/after uses the same standard brief: a landing page for "Tally," a fictional budgeting app.
- Before is the page generated from the brief with no skill.
- After is generated by us: we take the instructions the skill publishes (its SKILL.md, prompts and rules) and apply them to the same brief. We don't run the skill inside its own agent, plugin or tooling, so a native install can produce different, sometimes better, results.
- Both pages are screenshotted at 1440px. The score (1 to 5) is one editor's judgement. It is not a benchmark.
- Tools that can't be judged on a single HTML brief (most MCP servers, Figma integrations and collections) are listed without a score.
